
In 2009, the Beijing Sunshine Charity Foundation was registered and established at the Beijing Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau. Its predecessor was the Peking University Sunshine Volunteer Association, which was founded in 2002 by Liu Zhengchen, a student at Peking University, after he was diagnosed with leukemia. In 2013, Sunshine Charity took the lead in transforming from an unregistered public foundation to a registered public foundation in China. In 2020, Sunshine Charity was rated as a 5A-level (the highest level) social organization in the social organization evaluation.
Sunshine Charity is one of the largest charitable organizations in China focusing on medical and health services. It has the only non-governmental bone marrow bank in the country. It is the first non-governmental public welfare organization in China to fund medical research. It has established the world’s largest hospital-based school system and provides comprehensive empowerment support for non-governmental public welfare organizations, especially medical organizations. Sunshine Charity is a member of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). It is the first public welfare organization in China to sign a cooperation agreement with the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO). In June 2023, Sunshine Charity was granted special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council. It has received full marks in the transparency index evaluation of the China Foundation Center Network for 13 consecutive years.
With the tenet of “loving others with the heart of loving oneself”, Sunshine Charity has created several branded projects such as “Sunshine Charity Ward School”, “Lianai Project”, “Gift of Life”, and “Sunshine Bone Marrow Bank”. It has also launched several public welfare activities for the general public, such as “Flash Hero” and “Marching towards the Light”. It provides economic and service support for patients with serious illnesses, offers support for medical research and doctors, and advocates for China to formulate better medical and health policies.
At the same time, Sunshine Charity encourages people from all walks of life to participate in public welfare activities together. With the support of Sunshine Charity, Mr. Wang Junkai initiated the “Huanlan Dream Special Fund”, and Mr. Wang Yuan initiated the “Yuan Public Welfare Special Fund”. Through joint fundraising and other means, Sunshine Charity has carried out in-depth public welfare cooperation with more than 70 public welfare institutions across the country.
